Plan Static IP Addresses for ASIC Miners

Document and assign miner IP addresses carefully so BTC Tools discovery remains predictable and duplicate addresses do not disrupt management.

Workflow

Static IP change checklist

Static addressing can make miner operations predictable, but a bulk network change can also make an entire group unreachable. Build the IP plan outside the tool and test one segment at a time.

01

Reserve the range

Keep miner addresses separate from DHCP pools, infrastructure, and unrelated office devices.

02

Map physical layout

Assign ranges by room, rack, switch, or VLAN so an address carries operational context.

03

Track MAC addresses

Use MAC-to-IP records to resolve conflicts and replaced devices.

04

Keep a recovery path

Know how to reach, reset, or locally inspect a miner if a network change fails.

Checklist

Before you continue

A complete plan includes gateway, mask, DNS where required, and addresses reserved from other services.

  • Document the current DHCP and static address ranges.
  • Reserve a non-overlapping miner management range.
  • Map each intended IP to MAC, serial, rack, and owner.
  • Confirm subnet mask and gateway values.
  • Change a small reachable group first.
  • Rescan and reconcile every changed address before continuing.

Operations

IP planning record

Use a shared source of truth rather than reconstructing network ownership from scan results later.

AreaWhat to checkBTC Tools workflow
SubnetNetwork and prefix lengthDefines the valid local address space.
GatewayRouter address for the management networkRequired only where routing is intended.
DHCP rangeAutomatically assigned address poolMust not overlap planned static addresses.
Static rangeReserved miner addressesAssign by rack, room, switch, or asset plan.
MAC mappingDevice MAC to intended IPSupports conflict and replacement diagnosis.
RollbackPrevious address or reset methodNeeded when a changed miner becomes unreachable.

Setup

Change one network segment at a time

Apply the address plan to a small group, verify each miner at its new IP, update inventory records, and confirm no conflict before moving to the next rack or subnet.

Static IP work should connect network reservations, physical records, and a tested recovery method.
